The National AAUP advances academic freedom and shared governance, defines professional values and standards, promotes the economic security of those who teach and research in higher education, organizes to make these goals a reality, and ensures high education’s contribution to the common good.
The Indiana Conference of the AAUP promotes cooperation among AAUP chapters at Indiana institutions of higher education. The Indiana Conference works for the betterment of higher education through promoting academic freedom, shared governance, and the rights of faculty.
The Bloomington Chapter has pursued the national mission at Indiana University for over a century. Our local Committee A on Academic Freedom advises and vigorously advocates for ALL faculty colleagues and graduate students who believe that their academic freedom has been violated.
The AAUP is the only national organization standing up for your rights as faculty. Our local chapter is only as strong as its membership. Click on the link below to join the AAUP.

- Know Your Rights: Immigration Enforcement at IUWe’re sharing this Know Your Rights handout as a downloadable PDF (posted below) so IU faculty, staff, and students can quickly access it, save it, and share it when needed. It’s designed to help you think through what you would do, in advance, if you see immigration enforcement activity on campus or if agents show up at a classroom, office, or other university space. This document is especially urgent right now because the legal and policy landscape is changing quickly in Indiana, including proposed/advancing state legislation (SB 76) that seeks to prevent universities and other public institutions from providing sanctuary to and protecting members of our community.
- Executive Committee Statement on Concerns Regarding IU’s Promotion and Deployment of Generative AIThe uncritical adoption of generative artificial intelligence across higher education represents a fundamental threat to academic freedom, shared governance, and the educational mission of universities. Driven by corporate marketing and administrative efficiency claims rather than educational evidence, the values of learning, or the needs of students, institutions are rushing to implement AI systems that undermine faculty authority, compromise student learning, exploit intellectual property, and exacerbate existing inequities. This statement outlines and engages with these concerning trends through the lens of Indiana University’s own recent and ongoing investments in GenAI, which exemplifies how universities are prioritizing technological adoption over educational values and democratic governance. We argue that the widespread promotion of AI tools that cannot understand, reason, or create knowledge fundamentally contradicts the core mission of higher education: developing critical thinking, human understanding, and informed citizenship.
- Executive Committee Statement on ICE/CBP Virtual Job FairsIUB-AAUP stands with over 11,000 signatories in support of the petition, initiated by students at Indiana University Northwest, that we “keep ICE out of our campuses.” Indiana University has recently platformed (through its public-facing calendars and career infrastructure) Department of Homeland Security recruitment activity—including a series of U.S. Customs and Border Protection virtual recruitment events that appear on IU’s events listings and in Handshake.
- Executive Committee Statement on the Chicago Principles Adoption and ICHE American Values RequirementWe, the Indiana University-Bloomington chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP-IUB), representing hundreds of faculty, write this statement to express strong concern over two developments regarding academic freedom, free speech, and governmental over-reach.
- December 5, 2025: IUB AAUP All-Members Chapter MeetingJoin fellow AAUP members for a chapter meeting focused on celebrating this semester’s victories and mapping out the work ahead. Our chapter has grown rapidly over the past year, and this gathering is a chance to reflect on what we’ve accomplished together—and to get organized for the next phase of our advocacy.
