Welcome to the IU Bloomington Chapter of the AAUP!

Welcome to the IU Bloomington Chapter of the AAUP!

The National AAUP advances academic freedom and shared governance, defines professional values and standards, promotes the economic security of those who teach and research in higher education, organizes to make these goals a reality, and ensures high education’s contribution to the common good.

The Indiana Conference of the AAUP promotes cooperation among AAUP chapters at Indiana institutions of higher education. The Indiana Conference works for the betterment of higher education through promoting academic freedom, shared governance, and the rights of faculty.

The Bloomington Chapter has pursued the national mission at Indiana University for over a century. Our local Committee A on Academic Freedom advises and vigorously advocates for ALL faculty colleagues and graduate students who believe that their academic freedom has been violated.

The AAUP is the only national organization standing up for your rights as faculty. Our local chapter is only as strong as its membership. Click on the link to join the AAUP.

  • Press Release: Trump Administration Continues Its Persecution of Chinese Scholars with the Help of Indiana University
Dr. Youhuang Xiang from Indiana University Bloomington is a Chinese national and researcher in biology who was arrested by the FBI in November on charges of smuggling. He has been in detention for over four months. Dr. Xiang is a well-respected scholar making important scientific contributions, fully vested in the advancement of science in the U.S. and internationally. Colleagues of Dr. Xiang note that the charges against him reflect a troubling mischaracterization of a common and routine method of obtaining research samples. Nevertheless, he was sentenced on April 7th, 2026 on charges of smuggling a biological agent.
  • IUB AAUP Newsletter – March, 2026
2026 began with a big win for our chapter. Over the last six months we were the fastest-growing chapter in the AAUP. And now we are the largest advocacy chapter in the US. This was the result of a new recruitment drive based in solidarity and purpose, where so many faculty volunteered to meet one-on-one to discuss collective organizing. We are now a model for the rest of the country in recruitment and membership.
